Jason Labovitz is an educator and designer; pursuing his interest in the interactions between physical and digital mediums. Jason’s undergraduate studies included: architecture, classical saxophone, and recording technology. He received a Bachelor of Science in Technology from Bowling Green State University in 2009 and completed a Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2012.

Jason has worked at architecture firms in Aurora, Cleveland, and Toledo, Ohio, as well as Chicago, Illinois. During that time he was fortunate enough to collaborate and work with Austrian artists Kurt Hentschlager and Erwin Redl. From educational building design to historic preservation, landscape architecture to public housing, as well as large-scale interactive audiovisual art installations, Jason has worked on a number of different project types and scales. Project locations included: Aurora, Bowling Green, Chagrin Falls, Cleveland, Dayton, Toledo, Chicago as well as Birmingham (England).

Upon moving back to northeast Ohio, Jason received a post-baccalaureate degree in Integrated Mathematics from Cleveland State University in 2015. Jason holds two 5 Year Professional Teaching Licenses in Integrated Mathematics (grades 7-12) and in Visual Arts (grades K-12) as well as two 5 Year Advanced Career Technical Workforce Development Licenses in Business Information Systems (grades 7-12) and Visual Design and Imaging (grades 7-12). Before joining the Akron Public School District he taught in the North Ridgeville City School District at both the North Ridgeville Academic Center (grades 6-7) and Ranger High-Tech Academy STEM (grades 2-8). There he taught Traditional Art, Digital Art, and Fabrication. Jason was also a Teaching Fellow with the Cleveland Museum of Art during the 2018-2019 school year. His research project High Tech Low Res focused on gallery and object-based art. Jason also taught Graphic and Digital Design for three years in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District at Facing History New Tech (grades 9-12). While at Akron Public Schools Jason taught Information Technology at Buchtel CLC (grades 10-12), Graphic Design at Firestone CLC (grades 10-12), and served as the Media Specialist and taught Digital Literacy at the National Inventors Hall of Fame STEM Middle School (grades 5-8).

Jason’s courses focus on the following software: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign as well as Rhinocerous 3D, AutoCAD, SketchUp, iMovie, QuickTime, and various Google Applications. While a great deal of course time is invested in teaching students the technical skills needed to utilize the various software, particular attention focuses on allowing students to develop creative, imaginative, and original work. Final products are often non-digital, allowing students' designs to manifest into real, physical objects. From 3D printed and handmade models to large formatted prints, the overall goal is to develop an idea into a reality. It is only by bringing the design out of the computer, shifting from the digital to the physical, that the full potential of these goals is achieved.

Currently, Jason is a Program Manager for College and Career Academies at Akron Public Schools in Akron, Ohio.
